Centres for the Unemployed:
These organisations are part of a network of ICTU centres for the unemployed throughout the country. One of their objectives is to set up Basic Adult Education Classes for unemployed people, their dependents and women in the home. They may receive financial assistance from the VEC. Such programmes provide an opportunity to learn new skills, make new friends, develop self-esteem and improve job prospects.

Westmeath County Council provides a comprehensive range of materials for recreation, information and study to the community through its network of branch libraries. Currently there are six branch libraries serving the County and these are located in Athlone, Castlepollard, Kilbeggan, Killucan, Moate and Mullingar. In addition to a wide range of fiction and non-fiction titles for both adults and children the library also contains:
- Large print books
- Talking books
- Government publications
- Information leaflet
- Periodicals
- Maps
- Microfilm Athlone and Mullingar libraries also stock music CD's and language tapes for home use.
Public Access Computers Irish and Local Studies
The library service at the following branch libraries: Mullingar, Athlone, Moate, Kilbeggan, Killucan and Castlepollard provide public access to the Internet and E-mail facilities. There is also a range of computer packages available for public use. Book yourself an appointment by calling your local library. Photocopying Services This service is available to users of the libraries in Athlone, Castlepollard, Moate and Mullingar. As most people have an interest in the history of their locality, a small local history collection has been placed in each branch library. The main collection located at Co. Library Headquarters contains current and out of print material on every aspect of Irish and Westmeath history and culture. The collection contains: published material relating to County Westmeath, local newspapers, maps, microfilm, photographs, manuscripts etc. Some of the material can be made available for consultation at the local branch library, please consult the librarian.

References and Information Services
Our reference facilities are open to all free of charge. We hold a stock of encyclopaedias, atlass, dictionaries, handbooks and general reference material. Items are for consultation in the library and may not be borrowed.
Special Request Services
Through National and International services the library can provide a range of specialist, expensive or out of print material for members engaged in education and research. Primary Schools Service The Mobile Library van provides access to a wide range of material to the 76 Primary Schools in Co. Westmeath. Additional Activities Libraries provide a venue for exhibitions, literary and children's events and are anxious to co-operate with community groups in this regard.
