Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme (VTOS)
Content/Type:
Full-time educational and training course where students can choose from a menu of subjects which suits their individual needs. The course is flexible and dynamic in order to cater for the needs of individual students. Main subject areas include Computers, Business, Arts and Crafts plus general core subjects such as English, Communications, Maths etc. There are no qualifications required and it is designed to meet the needs of the individual.
VTOS is suitable for adults who left school without gaining a Leaving Certificate and/or have been out of education for a number of years.
Mode of Attendance:
Full-time
Athlone: 9.15am - 3.00pm Mon-Thurs. 9.15am - 1.00pm Fri.
Mullingar: 9.30am - 3.30pm Mon-Thurs. 9.30am - 12.30pm Fri.
Duration:
Two years, special conditions apply for a third year.
Possible Progression:
Third Level Education, employment.
Fee:
This course is free and open to unemployed people who are over 21 years of age who are receiving UA or UB for six months or more. Places are available for Lone Parents, Recipients of Disability Benefit, Dependent Spouses of qualifying adults and those claiming for credits.
Benefits:
- Qualifications obtained will provide employment opportunities, access to third level education or the skills required for setting up your own business.
- Books, materials and examination fees are free.
- Students continue to receive Social Welfare Benefits at the full maximum rate.
- A small meal allowance is payable. Students may also receive a travel allowance. A bonus is paid in some cases.
- Payment during holiday periods or weekend work is not subject to means testing.
