The recent government White Paper stresses the need for sport for all and states
"the performances of Irish Sports persons in top level international sport have been significant and have brought credit to themselves and to the country and immense pleasure to many people".
The White Paper also highlights the link between sport in school and sport in the community as significant. The role of teachers in sporting organisations can work to the advantage of the school and local sport organisations. This is just one way in which school can enrich community life. There is a very positive benifit resulting from this situation as students see sport as part of their overall lifestyle rather than just a subject on the school programme.
At the Community College there are three highly trained instructors in the area of Physical Education whose commmitment has brought many successes over recent years including All-Ireland team performances in Gaelic Football, Handball and Cross Country.
A notable feature of the College is the participation of asignificant number of teachers in other subject areas who give their lunch break to ensure an even greater variety of sports.
Sports Day held in May is noted for the high participation of girls in all track and field activities. At the end of the year awards ceremony the college selects the best all round female, junior and senior sports stars. Girls also study gymnastics as part of their Physical Education class. Swimming is also encouraged and classes are arranged for as many groups as possible.
A greater number of adult women in the wider community realise the benefit of sport to their health and general well being. It is time that this message is conveyed to girls at a younger age, sport for girls at the Community College aims to spread this message in good time for their future years.
