Adult Literacy Programmes
One to one tuition is provided by unpaid members of the community to adults who have difficulties with reading, writing and numeracy. These volunteers receive training from Waterford Institute of Technology and the National Adult Literacy Association before being matched with a participant.
When adults have acquired suitable levels of education and the associated confidence they are provided with basic level education classes in small groups. This teaching is provided by paid tutors and accreditation of programmes is through FETAC Level 3. The skills and interests of the participants are used in themed literacy programmes e.g. writing during horticulture classes or measuring during woodwork. Classes are provided in locations and at times suited to the participants. Outreach literacy supports are provided to external agencies and groups. The service is characterised by innovative metods of engaging adults in a confidential caring educational environment.
